All classes will be led by Benita Hampton on a volunteer basis. Benita is the co-founder of Texas Senior Advocates and is a Certified Dementia Practitioner and Neuro-Cognitive Behavior Coach. She has developed her career in the senior healthcare industry over the past 14 years.
MAY 2 | CREATING MOMENTS OF ENGAGEMENT FOR YOUR LOVED ONE WITH MEMORY IMPAIRMENT
This class explores ideas to engage your loved one's interest. We will identify activities that will allow you to enjoy each other's company. During the class we will explore the creation of memory boxes and how, when they are based around life preferences, can create beautiful moments of engagement.
JUNE 6 | UNDERSTANDING SUNDOWNING & CHALLENGING BEHAVIORS
Caring for a loved one with a memory impairment can be challenging. When sundowning or difficult behaviors are factored in, the dynamics change. In this class we will review tips to minimize sundowning symptoms and help caregivers cope with difficult behaviors by using simple techniques to help set you up for success.
JULY 18 | EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES TO USE WITH A DEMENTIA PATIENT
It is often said that patients with dementia speak another language. This class explores that language. Communication is the foundation upon which you will build (and re-build) your relationship. Learning to effectively communicate will allow you to build a strong foundation of care.
AUGUST 1 | A DAY WITH DEMENTIA
Take a 4 minute walk through an environment that is simulated to replicate what a patient with dementia experiences. This is an eye-opening experience for families, caregivers and anyone that has ever wondered what a day with dementia is like.
SEPTEMBER 5 | CALLING IN THE REINFORCEMENTS...WHEN IS IT TIME TO CONSIDER CARE OPTIONS?
This class covers the different types of care options including in-home care, independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care and Skilled Nursing. We will discuss when it may be time to consider these options, and what to look for when choosing a care provider.
OCTOBER 3 | CELEBRATING YOUR LOVED ONE'S LIFE, KNOWING THAT THIS IS NOT THE FINAL GOODBYE
This class discusses end of life care from the unique perspective of hospice patients. We will discuss how to help you and your loved one prepare for their final earthly journey.
NOVEMBER 7 | ELDER ABUSE...WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
This class explores the different types of elder and dependent abuse, and what the signs are symptoms are. There are many unreported and undocumented cases of elder abuse and exploitation simply because we are not always aware of the signs.
DECEMBER 5 | WHEN THE HOLIDAY'S AREN'T SO MERRY
When you are a caregiver for a loved one, the holiday season may not always be full of cheer. In this class we will discuss tips and best practices to help minimize caregiver stress during this busy time of year.
